Stress Tests

Alaska Occupational Health is set up to do stress tests. This is a common way to evaluate the heart, coronary arteries, and physical fitness level. The heart has to work harder during exercise - some heart problems may not show up when the heart is a rest but do show signs when the heart is asked to perform to a higher degree.

During the stress test the individual is asked to wear comfortable loose clothing and walking shoes or sneakers. Small electrodes are placed on the chest, arms, and shoulders and are connected by wires to an EKG machine. Blood pressure, heart rate and patient symptoms are all monitored and compared to provide us with an assessment of your heart.

Stress testing is often used to help us to evaluate chest pain or palpitations, shortness of breath, an abnormal EKG or lightheadedness. It is also commonly done to help to approve and direct a personal exercise program.
